Law on Rice

I couldn’t resist something with the title “The Lays Happiness Exhibit.”  I fear that Gerry Spence would not be pleased with me, but I did it anyway. I shared my own picture:

I am working as a law clerk until April for a creditors’ rights firm learning about foreclosures and creditors’ law in bankruptcy in a big building in downtown Phoenix.  And tonight, I just saw this article:

A lender is seeking to foreclose on the Viad Corporate Center, a high-rise office tower on Central Avenue in Phoenix, the latest example of the region’s commercial real-estate woes. Bank of America has asked a Maricopa County Superior Court judge to appoint a receiver for the signature tower at 1850 N. Central Ave. The lender said the building’s owner has not kept current since December on a $65 million loan.

…at least this time of year! I drove from Seattle in the winter, down the Five, through Los Angeles, and over the Ten, to this:

Maybe the foregoing weather accounts for my recent and new found obsession with palm trees.

I have to (somehow) remind myself that, even though the bar is just over a week away, I’m basically committed to this weather for life.

By the way, have a happy Valentines day.

My new rule for living can be concisely stated thusly: I never again want want to live where palm trees don’t grow, preferably thrive.

…well, not really me, but he said something like this in something I read: “How do you pick great talent? Find people who are comfortable in their own skins.”

I’ve been hanging out on the Arizona State campus for the past few days, studying for the bar exam.  Mostly I hang out in the law school, but I head over to the union for lunch now and then, the same union where the 18-20 year old set hangs out, a set not noted for its genuine confidence.

Now that I’m in my thirties, I understand what he means.  It takes time and experience to get comfortable in your own skin.

Here’s something you can’t do in Seattle. I’m rediscovering warm, happy weather. I may fail the bar exam (see supra for the source of my pessimism), but at least I’m happy.

Tomorrow I’m driving my other car from Seattle to Phoenix along with Eisenhower, my mutt, and a couple or hairless cats. I’ll probably post a few updates from the road. Stay in touch via Brightkite or Twitter!
